(The county maintains any 36 inches or larger; the townships are responsible for any culverts smaller than 36 inches.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #666666;\">County road status: open or closed, public or private.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #666666;\">Vacating or dedicating of county roads.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #666666;\">County tax levy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #666666;\">Board of Equalization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vernoncountymo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016-Vernon-County-budget-COPY.pdf\"><strong><span style=\"color: #666666;\">County budget.<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #666666;\">County ordinances, licenses, permits.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><strong>Responsibilities of the Commission <\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\">According to the Constitution of the State of Missouri, \u201cthere shall be elected a county court (county commission) of three members which shall manage the county business as prescribed by law, and keep an accurate record of its proceedings.\u201d<br \/>The Vernon County Commission has mainly administrative duties in setting tax levies, appropriating county funds, appointing board members and trustees of special services, accounting for county property, maintaining county bridges, and performing miscellaneous duties not handled by other county officials. The Commission oversees the spending of the county\u2019s tax dollars which includes this year a $4.2 million budget.<br \/>There is a misconception that the commission has authority over other elected officials and departments. The only control the commission has over these departments and department heads is budgetary. Nor does the commission have authority over the county\u2019s township boards.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #666666;\"><strong>Meeting with the Commission<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #666666;\">The Vernon County Commission is in regular session on Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Appointments with the commission are advised and can be made through the County Clerk at 417.448.2500. Walk-ins and calls are addressed around scheduled appointments.
